From January 1, 1959, the Triumph of the Revolution, various political and grass-roots organizations came into being which were extremely important to the economic, political and social life of the country. These are:
Communist Party of Cuba (PCC)
The Communist Party of Cuba is made up of the organized vanguard of the working class. It is the higher leadership of the Cuban State and society. It organizes and guides mutual efforts directed towards the supreme aims of constructing socialism. It is the continuation of the First Marxist Party founded in 1925 by Mella and Baliño.
Young Communists‘ League (UJC)
Vanguard organization of the youth, the PCC’s combative reserve and pool. Its responsibility is to form the youth in its rank and file; it works with youth grass-roots organizations and with children through the League of Pioneers of Cuba, in order to contribute to the education of the new generations of new constructors of socialism.
Central Organization of Cuban Workers (CTC)
Working class union organization which assembles a potential force with millions of members, both men and women.
Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR)
Working on a permanent basis with the patriotic education of the grass-roots. They have been an effective instrument for mobilization on tasks dealing with the economy, culture and social aspects of the communities.
Federation of Cuban Women (FMC)
It was built on a foundation of union among all the existing women’s revolutionary organizations. It has taken centre stage in the struggle for the eradication of prejudice, for equality and for emancipation of women.
University Student Federation (FEU)
Founded by Julio Antonio Mella. Its rank and file includes thousands of university students throughout national territory. It represents the Cuban student body, channels their concerns and promotes the mutual interests of its membership.
Secondary Students’ Federation (FEEM)
It brings together millions of young students at the higher secondary level. The membership is motivated to work hard to achieve better academic results and their interests and concerns are looked after.
League of Pioneers of Cuba (UPC), later “José Martí” Pioneer Organization (OPJM)
It works with children’s grass-roots organizations and with young children in order to contribute to the education of new generations as conscientious constructors of socialism.
